If you thought, as the name suggests, that the Illuminating Engineering Society of North america is comprised of only engineers who work with lighting, you'd be wrong.
The strength of the IESNA is in its diverse membership, with architects, lighting designers, educators, interior designers, contractors, distributors, government and utility personnel, manufacturers, and scientists, all contributing to the society's mission - that being to advance knowledge and disseminate information on good lighting practice.
A good indication of just how diverse the IESNA is, is to look at its leadership:
IES District of Columbia Section President is a Professional Lighting Designer
Our current Section President is the Lighting Designer at the National Air and Space Museum. Frank Florentine served his first ear as Section president back in the 80's, however he has continued to be a tremendous resource for the Section in the period between terms of service. Among his many accomplishments was serving as Chair of the IES Museum Lighting Committee and donating a great deal of his research toward the current recognized ANSI document, the IES Recommended Practice on Museum Lighting. He chaired the Host Committee for the 2000 IES Conference, and was recognized by the Society as a Fellow of the IESNA in 2002.
Our current Vice President is a manufacturer's sales representative for Holophane/AEL Lighting. Sarah's training is in Architecture and she has a wealth of information to offer.
Whether a veteran or just entering the lighting field, there is a place for you in the IESNA District of Columbia Section. Take advantage of the society's resources to attain both personal and professional growth.
