Greetings Capital Section Members:

Welcome to the Illuminating Engineering Society District of Columbia Capital Section.  The Officers and Board of Managers have begun planning for the year and hope to produce a schedule of events within the next month.  There is a virtual seminar in October on using Daylighting as a source of illumination. Imagine actually factoring in the design of Daylighting in the beginning of a project. In November we will enjoy a presentation by the Interior Design students at George Washington University of their luminaire designs in accordance with this years' theme defined by their instructor, Erin Speck.

It will soon be awards time for the IES. Again this year all entries were submitted online at the IESNA website, the due date is February 12, 2010. We had 20 projects submitted for Awards consideration last year.

Between February 13th and March 5th projects will be judged at their section level, if for only the satisfaction of the IA chair since the section awards hold no bearing on judging at the next higher levels. After section judging you may receive judges' considerations on how you could choose to improve your submission, at which point you can edit your submission from March 6th to 19th, or decide that you like it your way and let it go unedited. We will offer suggestions to help you along the national and international judging level, it is your choice to take the criticism or not....                                                                                                                No matter what the outcome of the section judging your project will then be judged online at the national level by randomly selected judges outside of our district. If your project receives the set number of points or more it will be forwarded to live judging at the international level. We are asking for YOUR input for Service awards to the Section. If you have an award recipient in mind, please contact either Emlyn Altman, Frank Florentine, or Dick Schwab with your suggestions. We also welcome any suggestions for Society Service awards, as well.

For now we would recommend that all of you visit the new IA web page at http://ies.org/programs/ia.cfm. This is where you can review an online submission tutorial, see the new rules and procedures, examine the sample score sheet and print out the awards timeline. Submission time is quickly approaching and please remember that the February 12th deadline will be strictly upheld.

Each section is allowed to nominate 10 judges. If you are not submitting any projects this year and would like to be involved in the judging, please contact wanda@capitalies.org.

We look forward to receiving all of your submissions and seeing you at the section awards dinner in May. Contact Wanda Barchard at wanda@capitalies.org with your questions.

Remember; Light is Magic!
